Daylight Saving Time ends on the first Sunday of November at 2:00 a.m. local time: the clock goes back to 1:00 a.m. The night runs 25 hours and you gain an hour of sleep. As in spring the rule is stated in local time, so each time zone falls back when its own 2 a.m. arrives, one after another.

Standard time is the default. Despite how it feels, this is not a shift into something unusual — it is the return to the zone's legal time. Daylight Saving Time is the exception, and it now covers about eight months of the year.

The evenings go dark abruptly. The following afternoon, sunset arrives an hour earlier. Traffic studies consistently find more pedestrian collisions in the weeks that follow, as the evening commute moves into darkness.

The dates differ from Europe's. The EU switches back on the last Sunday of October, a week earlier. During that week the usual five-hour gap between New York and London stretches to six.

Where it does not apply. Hawaii and most of Arizona never changed in the first place, so nothing happens there.

On sleep, the autumn change is the gentler of the two — an hour gained rather than lost — but the body clock still takes several days to resynchronise, and the effect is stronger in children and older adults.
